Isn't it lovely. One riot breaks out to protest against something and the next three days are spent with groups of organised idiots who take advantage of the chaos to break into shops and set cars on fire. I'm sure this kind of thing has happened before but I can't put my finger on when it was. Thankfully, where I live is a pretty small and apathetic town of 43000 people and there's not much in our shops worth stealing, so we've not been affected.
Yet.
It's moved up to Manchester, or so I hear, which is fifteen miles from me, as well as Warrington, which is ten miles the other way. Cars where my dad lives (Reading) have been set on fire and the restaurant where a friend took me when I went to stay with him in London has been looted and set alight.
You would think, with all of these arrests, that there would be hundreds of people to do community service, but I'll be betting they'll all be fined and/or jailed. So guess who gets to clear up the mess. Where does the money come from? Tax payers. I'm not one myself, so you'll have to pardon my slightly-less-than-righteous indignation but my parents are, and we're not exactly rolling in money as it is without the taxes that they pay going to waste on some moronic vandal's idea of a good time.
I need a sodding cuppa.

Date: 2011-08-10 01:33 pm (UTC)I'm studying abroad in London in the fall so I've been keeping a close eye on the news, and it's scary. One of my friends had to be sent home early from class because all abroad students had to be ushered to safety if they worked/had class in the area with the riots. I hope your family remains safe and you remain safe!! According to what I saw on BBC this morning it's starting to quiet down but, I'm not anywhere near the trouble, so you know better than I do.
I hope you enjoy that cuppa.

Date: 2011-08-10 09:51 pm (UTC)But you know, that doesn't surprise me. It's always the tax-payers who have to fix the mistakes. Don't forget, the taxes go to making those prisons as well. =1 Well at least here they do. This is just the same as that faggotry where -I- have to pay for my schooling and I had to get all the good grades at the end of the year to substantiate getting into college grade courses and NOT remedial courses when I started attending HCC. And yet my stepbrother, who was caught and charged with several counts of BURGLARY, was given the opportunity to finish his schooling in jail and then was offered FREE COLLEGE TUITION.
Well gee willickers. Let me go break the law. >1 Benefits are stupendous.
Oh and not a damn thing about the fines being a good way to pull up funds. I very severely doubt that proper funds will be given to those affected in order to FIX THEIR LIVELIHOODS.
I really hope that you stay safe, and that all this stuff stops. I worry about you over there, Fee. =< *cling*
